In the payments sector, data represents one of the most valuable and strategic assets available to a bank. However, transforming billions of transactions from different products, platforms, countries, and organizational units into a coherent, governed, and business-ready information asset requires a significant data management effort. This presentation will highlight the experience of Data for Payments (D4P), an initiative developed by UniCredit’s Group Payments Solutions to create a unified view of payment data at the Group level, integrating approximately 30 billion transactions, over 180 data sources, and 12 countries into a common model. Through this experience, we will illustrate some of the key themes of the DAMA framework, including data architecture, data integration, metadata management, data quality, data governance, and managing data as a product. Particular attention will be given to the main challenges faced during the project. These include defining a common payments ontology shared among the Group’s various banks, adopting the ISO 20022 standard as the reference language for the data model, normalizing information from heterogeneous ecosystems, and building a common taxonomy for products, services, counterparties, and transactions. It will also demonstrate how data enrichment through algorithms for counterparty recognition, transaction classification, and advanced analytics has enabled the transformation of raw data into actionable insights for business, risk, and compliance processes. Alongside the results achieved, the presentation will offer a reflection on the challenges that remain. The evolution from a project to a corporate capability, in fact, requires further investment in data governance, ownership, and organization. Topics such as process industrialization and the widespread adoption of information assets represent the next steps toward consolidating the value generated and supporting the data-driven evolution of the payments business.
